The concept of Light Barrier Racing is fairly simple – vehicles are fitted with specially designed engines that use electromagnetic fields to produce thrust, allowing them to reach incredible speeds. The Current Record

In 2017, the Light Barrier Racing Association (LBRA) hosted the first-ever Light Barrier Racing event in the Mojave Desert, California. The event attracted some of the biggest names in racing, as well as top engineers and scientists from around the world. The goal? To break the record for the world’s fastest land vehicle.

The record at the time was held by the ThrustSSC, a British-built jet-propelled car that reached a top speed of 763 mph in 1997. After months of preparation and testing, the LBRA’s flagship car, the Luminous, smashed the record with a speed of 815 mph, becoming the first vehicle to cross the light barrier.

The organization has announced plans to build a new vehicle, the Hyperion, which they believe can reach a speed of 880 mph – that’s over 100 mph faster than the speed of sound!
